Hunter Terrorism
Hunters always have an excuse!
Therefore:
What to do when your house pet is injured or killed by a hunter:
- Mark the spot where the killed or injured pet was found; if known, also mark the places where the hunter and pet owner were at the time of the shooting. Include witnesses and be sure to take photos or videos.
- Without delay, take the injured or killed animals to a veterinary for treatment or x-rays and ask for a written report. If possible a dead animal should be taken to an institute for veterinary pathology for conservation of evidence. (ask veterinary for address)
- File a written report (keep a copy) with the local police or better yet directly at the public prosecutor’s office. When possible, first get advice from your local animal protection society and if need be an attorney.
- Give a report of the incident to the local hunting authorities (ask for address at local or regional governmental offices). Send a copy to the regional hunting association and the local animal protection society.
- Tell the press about the incident, including pictures if available.
- Important: Let no evidence out of your hands: for example, expert reports, statements of witnesses, x-rays, bullets, negatives, etc. (make copies)
- The injured or killed animal belongs to the pet owner and upon request must be handed over by the hunter.
- According to the law (Germany) regarding disposal of animal bodies, the dead pet (individual animal) may be buried on the owner’s land – at least 50 cm deep and not in water protection areas or near public ways and places.
